If ruling Congress party in Punjab is eyeing farmer votes en bloc, hold on! Farmer leader Gurnam Singh Chaduni on Saturday announced to float a political party that will contest the state polls due early next year.

The new political outfit has been name Sanyukt Sangharsh Party. Chaduni is a member of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), an umbrella body of 40 farm unions, which led the farmers’ agitation against three farm laws that had been repealed. The agitation continued for over a year.

“We are launching the Sanyukt Sangharsh Party,” Chaduni said while addressing the media here.

The party will contest the Punjab assembly polls, which are due early next year, Chaduni said. “Our objective will be to purify politics and bring good people forward,” Chaduni, who is also the president of the Haryana Bhartiya Kisan Union, said.

While lashing out at all political parties for allegedly favouring “capitalists” and ignoring the interests of the poor, he said the Sanyukt Sangharsh Party will be a secular one and will work for the welfare of all sections of society.

The farmers’ body forming a political party and announcing to contest the ensuing state polls has come as a jolt for the ruling Congress and also the AAP that is trying to increase its footprint in the state. Given the mammoth agitation of the farmers against the BJP-led Union Government over now repealed farm laws, both the party’s were looking to grab the farmers votes.

With the farmers party coming into being, the anti-BJP votes is likely to see a major split; giving advantage to the saffron party in Punjab.
