Senior bureaucrat K Sanjay Murthy was on Thursday sworn in as the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India.

At a ceremony held today in the Ganatantra Mandap, Rashtrapati Bhavan, he made and subscribed to the oath of office before the President. He succeeds G C Murmu, whose term ended on November 20, 2024.

Murthy is a senior Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the 1989 batch of the Himachal cadre. He worked for 13 years in Himachal Pradesh in various capacities, including as Deputy Commissioner in three districts. Between 2002 and 2007, he was on central deputation, serving in the Ministry of Environment and Forests and the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology.

Later, he worked for three years at the National Institute for Smart Government (NISG) in Hyderabad, focusing on e-governance initiatives. Upon returning to Himachal Pradesh in 2007, he was appointed Managing Director of the Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation. From 2011 to 2013, Murthy held key roles in the Departments of Primary Education, Higher Education, and Technical Education in the state, as well as serving as Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Transport, Housing, and Urban Development for one year. His extensive experience in public administration, governance, and technology makes him well-suited for the role of CAG.

The Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) is an independent authority under the Constitution of India. He is the head of the Indian Audit and Accounts Department and the chief guardian of the public sector. Through CAG, the accountability of the government and other public authorities (spending public money) to the Parliament and the state assemblies is ensured and this information is given to the general public. The office of the Accountant General in India was established in 1858. In the year 1860, Sir Edward Drummond was appointed the first Auditor General.
