A 22-year-old lady doctor at a taluk hospital in Kottarakkara was stabbed to death on Wednesday by a man whom she was treating of injuries.
The accused, Sandeep, was brought to the hospital by police after he sustained injuries following clash with his family members. Working as a teacher at Nedumpana UP school, Sandeep was reportedly to be in inebriated condition at the time of the incident.
According to investigating police official, the doctor was dressing his wounds on leg when he suddenly got provoked and attacked using a scissor and scalpel. The doctor, Vandana Das, was rushed to a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram but could not be saved.
The official narrating the sequence of the incident said the man had called the emergency number to save him from his family members following a fight with them. When police arrived at the scene, they found him injured and took him to the taluk hospital for medical examination and treatment.
“He had consumed alcohol and was violent when we took him to the hospital. He was alone with the doctor as we are not allowed into the room when a patient’s wound is being dressed,” the official said, adding suddenly, there was a commotion and the doctor ran out screaming for help followed by the man who was carrying a scissor and a scalpel and was shouting ‘I will kill you’.
The officer said it was not known why he got so violent and targeted the doctor. When the police officers at the scene tried to stop him, he attacked them too. Four others were also injured as the accused also vandalised some areas of the hospital, the officer said.
“He was later subdued with much difficulty and taken into custody,” the officer said.
Indian Medical Association (IMA) has called for a 24-hour-statewide strike on Wednesday to protest against the incident. IMA said that the intensive care units and emergency wings would be exempted from the strike, which will continue till 8 am on Thursday.
Such incidents lower the morale of doctors to work peacefully with confidence and free spirit,” said IMA state president Dr Sulphi, He condemned the constant attack on doctors across Kerala.
