Flowers from neighbouring Tamil Nadu would miss to add colour to Onam festival in Kerala.

For, Pinarayi Vijayan government is ensuring that flowers from Tamil Nadu do not cross the border and flood the Onam market. The outbreak of pandemic and precaution measures had been cited as reasons.

The 10-day harvest festival would begin on Saturday and conclude on September 2.

The attractive floral carpet at the home and office is the salient feature of the festival.

Vijayan directed that people should use flowers available in and around their houses instead of neighbouring states.

The decision of the Kerala government had descended a pall of gloom in the sleepy town of Thovala. One of the biggest flower markets in Tamil Nadu, it is located about 20 km from the Kerala border.

The entire economy of the town is dependent on flower sales during the Onam season in Kerala. “Interestingly, for the Kerala government, its flowers and not fruits and vegetables from the neighbouring states that spread the virus,” quipped a seller.

Besides Tamil Nadu village, the petty flower vendors in Kerala are also suffering. “Onam is one festival we are waiting for. The ban order should not be implemented as the festival market was the annual income of many vendors,” said a woman selling flowers in the state capital.

For the last four months, there is no supply of flowers from outside the state.
