Kochi, May 3

The Kerala police have arrested two people in connection with the death of a 16-year-old student after consuming shawarma at a food outlet located in Neeleswaram in Kerala’s Kasargod.

Ideal Food Point, the restaurant in question where the students ate on Friday, April 29, has now been sealed. The two arrested have been identified as Sandhesh, the cook and the restaurant’s managing partner Anas.

According to reports, a student identified as Devananda fell sick shortly after she ate the shawarma and passed away on Sunday, May 1.  Though 49 others had been hospitalized after eating at the food outlet, police said the figure could increase as the restaurant functioned a day after the students fell sick.

Following her death, students joined by the local residents ransacked the restaurant and set the vehicle of the restaurant on fire.

On Monday, the authorities conducted fresh raids on the restaurant and found that it was functioning without a license. The shop did not have a valid license from the Food Safety Department.

The two arrested have been booked under sections 304 (death by negligence), 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 272 (adulteration) of the Indian Penal Code.

The police have summoned the owner of the outlet, who lives in Dubai, for interrogation.
