A retired jewellery shop assistant, 90-year-old Margaret Keenan today created history after becoming the first person in the world to receive the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine this morning.
Margaret Keenan, who turns 91 next week, received the jab at 6.31am in Coventry on Tuesday as the United Kingdom (UK) launched its biggest-ever vaccination campaign.
Mrs Keenan, known to family and friends as Maggie, is a former jewellery shop assistant who only retired four years ago. She has a daughter, a son and four grandchildren.
Originally from Enniskillen, Northern Ireland, she has lived in Coventry in the West Midlands for more than 60 years.
Around 50 hospitals in the United Kingdom National Health Service NHS have started administering the new coronavirus vaccine to people over 80, who are either hospitalised or have outpatient appointments scheduled, along with nursing home workers.
Margaret met these requirements and received the shot at University Hospital Coventry.
She said: “It’s the best early birthday present I could wish for because it means I can finally look forward to spending time with my family and friends in the New Year after being on my own for most of the year.”
She felt extremely “privileged to be the first person vaccinated against COVID-19.”
