The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Legislative Party in New Delhi elected Rekha Gupta as its leader; paving the way for the former Delhi University President to take over as the new Chief Minister of Delhi.

The meeting was held under the supervision of National Secretary Om Prakash Dhankar and former Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, who were appointed as central observers to oversee the selection process.

Parvesh Kumar, who defeated Arvind Kejriwal and was among the front-runners for the post, will be the Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi.

Fifty-year-old Rekha Gupta is a seasoned BJP leader with a long political career rooted in student leadership. Currently serving as the General Secretary of Delhi BJP, she has previously been the National Vice President of BJP’s Mahila Morcha. She won the Shalimar Bagh (North-West) seat in the 2025 Delhi Assembly Election with 68,200 votes.

A first-time MLA, Rekha Gupta is a lawyer by profession and began her journey in politics as the President of the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) from 1996 to 1997. She later transitioned into municipal politics, winning the Delhi Councillor elections from Uttari Pitampura (Ward 54) in 2007 and securing re-election in 2012. She has also served as the Mayor of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation, further strengthening her administrative credentials.

According to reports, the BJP leadership considered Rekha Gupta’s experience and the party’s potential preference for a woman leader to lead the capital. Her tenure as a former Mayor and active role in BJP-led initiatives in Delhi made her a strong contender for the role.

The announcement was initially delayed due to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent return from the US.

The BJP won the Delhi Assembly elections, making a comeback to the national capital government after a gap of 27 years. It crossed the majority mark comfortably by winning 48 seats out of a total of 70.

Sources said that the new Chief Minister will take oath along with six ministers on Thursday at a grand ceremony. The oath ceremony will be held at the city’s iconic Ramlila Maidan.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena, MPs and MLAs besides over 200 top leaders from the BJP and allies are likely to attend the ceremony.

Atishi, the outgoing Chief Minister and AAP boss Arvind Kejriwal, Devender Yadav, the head of the Congress’ Delhi unit have also been invited.
