Mumbai attack mastermind and Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) operations commander Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi was arrested on Saturday in Pakistan on terror financing charges, an official said.
Lakhvi, who was on bail since 2015 in the Mumbai attack case, was arrested by the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) of Punjab province. However, the CTD did not reveal the place of his arrest.
Lakhvi was first arrested by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) in February 2009 on the basis of the confessional statement of the lone surviving attacker Ajmal Kasab arrested by the police in Mumbai. He was charged with imparting training and giving instructions to the 10 terrorists who carried out the Mumbai attacks between November 26 and 28, 2008, leaving 166 people dead.
He was detained at the Adiala Jail.
But his stay in the jail had been luxurious. In March 2015, BBC Urdu published a report stating that Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi is living a life of comfort while being held in detention at Adiala Jail.
“He [Lakhvi] can receive any number of guests, any time of the day or night, seven days a week,” the report quoted a jail official. Inside his jail cell, Lakhvi enjoys the use of a television, mobile phone and internet access. Moreover, none of his visitors have to identify themselves to jail officials.
In April, Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi was granted bail and released from the Jail. The Pakistani media blamed loopholes in the legal system for the release of terrorists. Since then, there was pressure to cancel the bail.
