Kolkata, May 24
Displaying superb leadership qualities, BJP Member of Parliament Locket Chatterjee returned the security cover provided to her citing that her party colleagues were also under threat.
The security cover of the BJP leaders was upgraded following large-scale violence after the election results were announced in West Bengal on May 2. The ruling Trinamool Leaders targeted the saffron leaders and cadre, killing over a dozen.
Chatterjee asked the Centre to withdraw her ‘Y’ category security, saying that if she could not protect her party members, she should not have protection either. Under the ‘Y’ category security, four to five armed commandos escort the protectee.
Locket Chatterjee, BJP MP from West Bengal’s Hooghly district, wrote an email to the Home Ministry on Sunday to convey her decision.
“People of West Bengal are facing so much violence and the women are very much insecure at this point. As a representative of the common people I am unable to secure my citizens, so I want to withdraw my security cover provided by your team and at the same time thank you for the service,” Locket Chatterjee wrote in the email.
In a separate video message, Locket Chatterjee said, “BJP workers are being attacked and harassed after the May 2 poll results. So many workers have died due to post-poll violence, so many women BJP workers have been harassed. Many women party workers are yet to return to their homes. I feel very bad that I am having central security but cannot save several others in the state. I can’t accept it from a humanitarian point of view. Initially I didn’t have any security, but was accorded Y category ahead of the Bengal election. People have voted me as their MP but still I can’t save them.”
