Hyderabad, August 16
Eleven luxury cars today went off the roads as the Telangana Transport Authorities today seized them in connection with tax evasion.
According to Papa Rao, the Deputy Transport Commissioner, a 40-member team of motor vehicle inspectors conducted random inspections on high-end cars on August 15. Of it, four had paid life-long tax and hence escaped action from the authorities.
The luxury vehicles included Rolls Royce, BMW, Mercedes Benz, Lamborghini, Ferrari and Maserati. The vehicles bought and registered in other states were being used in Telangana without paying road tax. The seizure is expected to bring around Rs 3 to 8 crore to the state exchequer.
The luxury vehicles were under the scanner of the authorities. “For the last six months, we were tracking these vehicles,” Rao said, adding that on August 15 the vehicles were intercepted while racing to a five-star hotel near the airport. On verification, the 11 vehicles were found plying without paying road tax and were seized, he added.
The RTA is now mulling on expanding the investigation by writing to central agencies on tax evasion. So far, all the owners have agreed to pay the taxes with a penalty. Vehicles have been released after getting affidavits.
