The Madhya Pradesh cabinet on Monday approved a capital outlay of Rs 4600 crore for setting up a new 660 Mw super critical thermal power plant under expansion plan at Amarkantak Thermal Power Station.
In October 2019, Madhya Pradesh Power Generating Company Limited (MPPGCL) received terms of reference to add a new 660 MW supercritical unit at the power station in Chachai of Anuppur district. In June 2022, Coal India subsidiary South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) signed an MoU with the MPPGCL to develop the unit at an investment of Rs 4,665 crore.
In January 2023, the EAC recommended Environmental Clearance for the 660 MW supercritical expansion in place of the existing Phases I and II (210 MW). The project will be implemented by a joint venture incorporated between MPPGCL and SECL. For the financial support of the project, 70 percent loan will be provided by the financial institutions, 15 percent share capital by SECL and the remaining 15 percent share capital by the state government from the budget to the MPPGCL over a period between 2022-23 and 2028-29.
A Madhya Pradesh government spokesperson said the cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan approved the financial aid to the project. The project is being expedited keeping in view the future energy requirements of the state.
The commercial production from the unit is likely to start in the financial year 2027-28.
