The Uttar Pradesh government has ordered a judicial probe into the Maha Kumbh stampede in which 30 people have been killed.

The state government Wednesday evening issued the official statement informing that 30 people were killed in the stampede that occurred near Sangam at 2 am today. The officials said 25 bodies have been identified.

The 60 people injured in the incident have been admitted to different hospitals. The pre-dawn stampede at the Sangam area of the Maha Kumbh broke out after many pilgrims jostled for space to take a holy dip on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya, one of the most auspicious days. Many people started breaking barricades before the stampede happened, the police officer said.

Meanwhile, the Uttar Pradesh government has ordered a judicial probe to look into the causes that led to the tragic incident. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced that a three-member judicial commission headed by Justice Harsh Kumar had been formed. The other members include former Director General of Police V K Gupta and retired IAS DK Singh.

“We have been monitoring the entire incident from the Chief Minister’s control room, the Chief Secretary’s control room, and the DGP’s control room throughout the day,” Adityanath said. Despite all necessary arrangement, if any incident took place than a detail enquiry has to be conducted, he added.

“A large number of devotees had gathered in Prayagraj since 7 pm Tuesday to take a holy dip on Mauni Amavasya. An unfortunate incident took place on the Akhara Marg in which over 90 people were injured and 30 people died. 36 people are undergoing treatment in Prayagraj. This incident took place as the crowd broke the barricades of the Akhara Marg,” the Chief Minister said.
