Maharashtra police gun down 12 Maoists on Chhattisgarh border

The elite commandoes of Maharashtra police on Wednesday gunned down 12 Maoists in an encounter that took place near Chhattisgarh border in Gadchiroli district.

Police sources said an operation was launched today around 10 am from Gadchiroli in Maharashtra in which 7 C60 parties led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (operations) were sent near Chhattisgarh Border in Wandoli village. The action came after the police received credible intelligence inputs that 12-15 Maoists were camping near the village.

When the force reached the spot, the rebels opened fire that resulted in a fierce encounter in which the Maharashtra police neutralised 12 Maoists. During search operation that was carried out after the encounter, several automatic weapons and bodies were recovered.

The seven automotive weapons recovered from the spot included 3 AK47, 2 INSAS, 1 carbine and 1 SLR. The Gadchiroli police claimed that DVCM Laxman Atram alias Vishal Atram, Incharge of Tipagad Dalam, has been identified as one of the dead Maoists. Further identification of Maoists and area search is continuing, the police said.

One sub inspector of C60 and one jawan have suffered bullet injuries. They are out of danger, have been evacuated and been shifted to Nagpur.
