Kolkata, May 6
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for all those who died in post-poll violence in the state since the May 2 election results.
The announcement came amidst her party Trinamool Congress (TMC) refusing any such violence or incident taking place in the state. Even state police had termed incident as “fake” while the party cadre had gone to the extent to claim the clips of the violence as either “old” or “fabricated”.
Addressing the media, Mamata Banerjee said, “Rs 2 lakh compensation will be given to each of the victims, irrespective of their political colour.”
BJP has claimed at least 14 of its party workers have been killed in the state since the May 2 election results declared TMC to have swept the polls.
“I can see some central ministers are coming here to provoke riots at a time when all political activity is curbed. There are always some sporadic incidents after elections and that is why I announced no celebrations,” said Mamata Banerjee on Thursday.
She added, “It has not even been 24 hours since I’ve taken over and already letters and central teams are being sent.”
Speaking of the BJP leaders visiting Bengal over the violence and alleged attacks on party workers, Mamata Banerjee said, “Since BJP has got more seats in Cooch Behar, they are going overboard.”
“BJP leaders don’t come here when people fail to get oxygen, they don’t send teams when Hathras happens, but they sent teams here in Bengal,” said Mamata Banerjee.
“Let me say this that whoever is coming from outside, even if it is the central ministers, RT-PCR is mandatory even if they come on special flights,” said Mamata Banerjee
