Trinamool Congress Chief and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee would contest from Nandigram in East Midnapore as part of the big election strategy designed by the ruling party.
Though entering into the election fray in Nandigram and breaching the bastion of Adhikari family would not be an easy task for Mamata. Earlier, she had hinted contesting from two seats, Nandigram and Bhowanipore, from where she has been the sitting MLA since 2011.
The TMC today announced the list of candidates for the ensuing state elections. Mamata would be contesting only from Nandigram as the party felt the constituency held the key to power in West Bengal and the Chief Minister in the fray would send a big message across the state specially among the farmers and rural belt.
She had demolished the Left Front rule in Bengal while riding the Nandigram anti-land acquisition movements. Nandigram is the epicentre of TMC’s politics and Mamata’s masterstroke is certainly going to have its impact in all the 35 assembly seats in both the Midnapore. East Midnapore has 16 assembly seats while West Midnapore has 19.
In 2016 assembly polls, TMC won 13 out of 16 seats in East Midnapore including Nandigram which was won by Suvendu Adhikari. In West Midnapore, it bagged 17 out of 19 seats. The district played an important role in brining TMC to power in the state.
The only challenge that the TMC would face in Nandigram would be from Suvendu Adhikari, who was the key man and brain behind Mamata Banerjee’s movement in Nandigram in East Midnapore in 2007. It was Suvendu’s strategy that helped her to oust the 34-years of Left Front rule in Bengal. Over the years, Mamata also gave due respect to him and his family members for their dedication towards the party.
Suvendu had now switched over to the BJP and would be contesting from Nandigram. The Adhikari family had accepted the challenge and would leave no stone unturn to take on Mamata Banerjee.
