The victims have been identified as Assistant Commandant Sudhakar Shinde and Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) Gurmukh Singh, both non-gazetted officials belonging to the ITBP’s 45th battalion deployed in Narayanpur district. Both the ITBP men were martyred because of bullets injuries, Bastar Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sundarraj P said.
According to the Bastar IGP, the incident took place at around 12.10 pm near Kademeta camp of 45th battalion of ITBP under Chhotedongar police station limits. The party was on a search operation in the area when ambushed by a small action team of Maoists.
As the troop came under the range, rebels opened fire. The two officials were reportedly hit in the first spray of bullets. The ITBP personnel took the position and retaliated. The rebels however fled the spot when the reinforcement was rushed.
