The Maoists cadre carried out a heinous crime and axed a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader to death in poll-bound Chhattisgarh on Saturday, the day Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on a visit to the state.

The rebels on Saturday evening brutally axed Ratan Dubey in village Kaushalnar under Jharghati police station area of Narayanpur district. Dubey, the District Vice President of the BJP and a resident of Narayanpur left for Kaushalnar village for canvassing in favour of BJP candidate. Since it was a weekly market day, Dubey campaigned among the villagers and informed them about the salient points of the election manifesto that BJP released Friday.

Narayanpur Additional Superintendent of Police Hemsagar Sidar said the rebels, who attacked the BJP leader with sharp weapons, could not be identified. After canvassing, the BJP leader was addressing the gathering when two Maoists in villager’s attire reached and attacked with an axe from behind. Despite being hit on his head, Dubey fled and reached near his vehicle. Unfortunately, he could not embark as the driver had locked the vehicle.

By that time, a group of Maoists encircled the BJP and attacked with axe, and other sharp weapons. The incident took place at around 5.30 pm. Dubey died on the spot itself. On receiving information about the incident, police and security forces were sent to the spot. They recovered the body and brought it to the district headquarters of Narayanpur.

The BJP leader was a resident of Mahavir Chowk in Narayanpur and was Narayanpur District Panchayat Member, Goods Vehicle Transport Association. He had been actively associated with the organisational work and had gone to the village to campaign for the BJP candidate.

The incident took place on the day Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Chhattisgarh and addressed an election meeting in Durg district. Just two days ago, the Prime Minister had addressed another election meeting in Kanker, the adjoining district of Narayanpur.
