Maoists tried to wreak panic on the day the BJP government was assuming office in Chhattisgarh as the rebels ambushed a party of security personnel in which one jawan was martyred.

Another jawan was injured in the incident that took place at around 11 am on Wednesday at Chhota Dongar in Narayanpur district. The incident took place hours before Vishnu Deo Sai was taking oath as the new Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh by trouncing Congress that ruled the state for five years.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and several dignitaries were attending the swearing-in ceremony at the state capital.

Sources said the jawans from the 9th battalion of the Chhattisgarh Armed Force (CAF) were patrolling the area when rebels ambushed the party near Amdai iron ore mines owned by Neco Industries. The Maoists detonated a powerful improvised explosive device (IED). They later opened heavy fire.

The security personnel gave a befitting reply and forced the rebels to retreat in the adjoining forests.
