Raipur, January 11
An Indian Air Force (IAF) chopper carrying the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel was attacked by Maoists in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district on Wednesday.
No casualty had been reported on the part of security personnel. The Inspector General of Police, CRPF, Chhattisgarh Sector, said in a statement that jawans of elite CoBRA of the CRPF were being flown to the forward operating base when the incident took place. Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) is a specialized force of the CRPF which has been raised for guerilla/jungle warfare type operations for dealing with Maoist.
The statement added that while landing, the exchange of fire took place between the jawans and the Maoists, who later fled the spot. No casualty was reported on the part of CRPF while a massive search was on in the area to assess the damage caused to the rebels.
The CRPF IG’s statement came in wake of rumour that circulated through out the day citing a fierce encounter between the Maoists and the commandos of CoBRA and Telangana’s Greyhounds. One report suggested that air strike was conducted on the Maoists camp inside the Chhattisgarh territory in which a dreaded leader was eliminated.
Another report said the rebels fired at the IAF chopper in which six CoBRA jawans and the pilot were injured.
