Maoist guerrillas looted a van laden with LPG cylinders meant for distribution among the tribals under a government scheme in Chhattisgarh’s restive Sukma district.

According to reports, the van was transporting cylinders from Konta to Bhejji on Monday when rebels intercepted the vehicle near Gorkha and Kotacheru. The rebels bashed up the driver and helper before driving away with the vehicle loaded with the gas cylinder to be distributed among the poor people under Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana.

The ambitious scheme was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 1 May 2016 to distribute 50 million LPG connections to women of Below Poverty Line families.

Senior police officials said this was for the first time that the rebels had looted the LPG cylinders. However, there had been no track record that the Left-wing extremists had used the LPG cylinder while bombing.

The security forces had launched a massive operation in the area to track the rebels. Officials said they would soon apprehend the culprit and recover the looted cylinders.
