Raipur, November 4
The Maoists cadre carried out a heinous crime and killed a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader in Chhattisgarh on Saturday, the day Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on a visit to the state.
The rebels on Saturday evening brutally stabbed Ratan Dubey in village Kaushalnar under Jharghati police station area of Narayanpur district. Dubey, the District Vice President of the BJP, was on election campaign in the area, canvassing for the party candidate. The sensitive constituency goes to the polls in the first phase of elections on November 7.
Narayanpur Additional Superintendent of Police Hemsagar Sidar said the rebels, who attacked the BJP leader with sharp weapons, could not be identified. On receiving information about the incident, police and security forces were sent to the spot. They recovered the body and brought it to the district headquarters of Narayanpur.
The BJP leader was a resident of Mahavir Chowk in Narayanpur and was Narayanpur District Panchayat Member, Goods Vehicle Transport Association. He had been actively associated with the organisational work and had gone to the village to campaign for the BJP candidate.
The incident took place on the day Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Chhattisgarh and addressed an election meeting in Durg district. Just two days ago, the Prime Minister had addressed another election meeting in Kanker, the adjoining district of Narayanpur.
Former Chief Minister Raman Singh termed the incident as a target killing and said the BJP leaders were threatened to canvass in the interior areas of Bastar. The Congress must understand that BJP workers cannot be scared, he said, adding that people of Bastar are with the BJP.
