Of the 35 newly elected Members of Legislative Council (MLCs) in Uttar Pradesh, 33 or 94 per cent are crorepatis.
The 31 (94 per cent) MLCs are from ruling Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) while 2 (100 per cent) Independent MLCs have declared assets worth more than Rs 1 crore, poll watchdog Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) said in a report.
It had analysed the self-sworn affidavits of 35 out of 36 newly elected MLCs in the Uttar Pradesh 2022 Legislative Council Elections. A Jansatta Dal (Loktantrik) MLC namely Akshay Pratap Singh has not been analysed due to the unavailability of his complete and properly scanned affidavit on the CEO website while making the report.
The average assets per MLC in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council elections is Rs 17.39 crore while the average assets per MLC for 33 BJP MLCs analysed is Rs 16.94 crores and 2 Independent MLCs have average assets of Rs 24.75 crores.
Out of the 35 MLCs analysed, 14 (40 per cent) MLCs have declared criminal cases against themselves. Nine (26 per cent) MLCs have declared serious criminal cases including cases related to murder, attempt to murder, bribery etc while three MLCs have declared cases related to murder (IPC Section-302) against themselves.
Four MLCs have declared cases of attempt to murder (IPC Section-307).
Seven (20 per cent) MLCs have declared their education qualification to be between 8th pass and 12th pass while 28 (80 per cent) MLCs have declared having an educational qualification of graduate or above.
