Having created assets from television shows and cricket that run into millions, former Punjab Congress President Navjot Singh Sidhu will now earn Rs 30 to Rs 90 per day once inside the jail.
The Supreme Court on Thursday awarded one-year rigorous imprisonment to cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu in a road rage case that took place in 1988 in which one person died. Sidhu has sought a few weeks’ time from the court to surrender. He has cited medical ground. Once he surrendered, he is most likely to be imprisoned in Patiala Central Jail.
According to Punjab jail manual, Sidhu will “work without pay” for three months in the Jail. After three months training without pay, he will be classified as unskilled, semi-skilled or skilled prisoner and will be entitled to earn anywhere between Rs 30 and Rs 90 per day depending on his category.
Sidhu in his affidavit, filed along with the nomination papers during the state assembly elections this year, declared total assets worth Rs 44.63 crore. Besides two high-end SUVs, he owns residential properties worth Rs 35 crore. Sidhu had unsuccessfully contested the assembly election as the Congress’ candidate from the Amritsar East constituency.
Of the assets, he has disclosed watches worth Rs 44 lakh; showing his interest in the dressing. Sidhu is known for his colourful dressing sense but will have to don white clothes which are “mandatory for all convicts inside Punjab prisons”.
