Nagpur, February 13

Security cordon around Maharashtra Urban Development Minister Eknath Shinde has been strengthened following threat from the Maoist insurgents.

Shinde, who is also Guardian Minister for Thane and Maoist-infested Gadchiroli, has received a letter reported from the Maoists outfit at his residential address. The rebels had threatened to target the Minister to avenge the killing of its cadre in Gadchiroli in which 26 Maoists including its top gun Milind Teltumbde were gunned down.

The elimination of Milind Teltumbde came as a big jolt to the Left-wing Extremism as he was reportedly working on a new red corridor proposed in Maharashtra-MP-Chhattisgarh committee of CPI (Maoist). He was the In-charge of the Maharashtra-MP-Chhattisgarh committee.

In a meticulously planned operation, the elite C-60 commandos of Maharashtra Police in November raided the Maoists camp in the thickly forested Dhanora area in Gadchiroli. In the encounter, 26 Maoists including Teltumbde were killed.

The Thane police have handed over the letter to the crime branch for further investigation. Meanwhile, the security in and around the Minister has been beefed up.
