Nagaland is the only state in the country where the police personnel are more than the actual sanctioned strength.
A report published by an agency under the Ministry of Home Affairs said that Nagaland had an actual force of 28,113 personnel against the sanctioned strength of 26,738, making it probably the only state or Union Territory in India with surplus police personnel.
The Nagaland Police force that includes civil, district reserve, special armed force and Indian reserve battalion (IRB) has a surplus of 1375 personnel, informed the latest ‘Data on Police Organizations’ released recently by the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D).
All other states and UTs have vacancies ranging from 54 in the UT of Lakshadweep to 1,11,865 in Uttar Pradesh, the report said.
Among the central states, the vacancies was highest in Telangana at 38 per cent of the sanctioned posts followed by Madhya Pradesh at 24 per cent while Odisha had lowest opening in the security forces at 12 per cent.
According to the data, Chhattisgarh has actual force of 63839 against the sanctioned strength of 75664, about 15 per cent posts still remaining vacant. In Telangana, 78369 posts had been sanctioned while 48877 had only been filled.
In Madhya Pradesh, 99496 policemen are working against the sanctioned post of 130984, in Jharkhand 64938 against sanctioned post of 82277 and in Odisha, 21 per cent vacancies could not be filled as 58455 personnel were working against the sanctioned strength of 66161, the report added.
