New Delhi, June 6
Newly elected Members of Parliament (MPs) of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance on Friday elected Narendra Modi as its leader, paving the way for him to take oath as Prime Minister for third successive term.
Besides NDA MPs, senior leaders of the alliance, including chief ministers, were also present. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh proposed a resolution in support of Modi’s leadership, with allies and MPs endorsed it.
While proposing PM Modi’s name Rajnath Singh said, “I want to congratulate all the newly elected MPs…Today, we are here to elect the leader of the NDA. I believe that PM Narendra Modi’s name is the most suitable for all these posts… and added, “…We are fortunate that we are going to get a sensitive Prime Minister like Modi ji…I would like to make it clear that this alliance is not a compulsion for us but a commitment.”
BJP leaders Amit Shah, Nitin Gadkari, TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu, Bihar CM and JDU chief Nitish Kumar, Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde, LJP chief Chirag Paswan, HAM chief Jitan Ram Manjhi, Apna party chief Anupriya Patel, Jana Sena Party chief Pawan Kalyan also endorsed PM Modi’s name as NDA’s leaders.
Earlier, Key members of the NDA backed Modi for a third consecutive term. TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu and JDU’s Nitish Kumar publicly accepted the proposal to elect Modi as the alliance’s prime ministerial candidate.
“Today India is having a right leader at the right time. We are very confident under his leadership India will become the 1st or 2nd largest economy in the next 5 years,” Naidu said while addressing the meeting.
JDU’s Nitish Kumar hit out at the Opposition INDIA alliance and said that his party will be with PM Modi at all times.
“Opposition bloc has not done any work for country, I will be with PM Modi at all times. All the pending works of Bihar will be done. It is a very good thing that all of us have come together and we will all work together with you (PM Modi),” Kumar said.
The NDA clinched 293 seats in the 543-member Lok Sabha, marking a significant victory. Unlike the BJP’s dominance in the last two terms, the party secured only 240 seats, falling short of the 272 needed for a majority government.
Crucial to the BJP’s path to majority are four allies: Chandrababu Naidu’s TDP with 16 seats, Nitish Kumar’s JDU with 12, Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena with 7, and Chirag Paswan’s Lok Janshakti Party-Ram Vilas with 5.
The Prime Minister along with the NDA leaders is likely to meet the President, Droupadi Murmu later today to stake the claim to form the government. Sources said Modi would be sworn-in as PM for the third successive term on Sunday. Leaders from neighbouring countries are likely to be part of the event.
