The permanent suspension of US President Donald Trump’s Twitter account had paved the way for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to become the most followed active politician on the active micro-blogging site.
Twitter had permanently suspended Trump’s Twitter account after hundreds of his supporters laid siege to the US Capitol on Friday. Prime Minister Modi has 64.7 million followers whereas Trump had 88.7 million followers before Twitter removed his account.
US President-elect Joe Biden has 23.4 million followers whereas first Asian–American woman US Vice-President elect Kamala Harris has 14.2 million followers on Twitter.
However, Barack Obama remains unequivocally the most popular politician on Twitter with 127.9 million followers.
Back home, Union Home Minister Amit Shah comes second to Narendra Modi on the micro-blogging social media platform with a following of 24.2 million while Rahul Gandhi falls close at 17.1 million followers.
Twitter had removed Trump’s account in the wake of the Capitol violence. A tweet from TwitterSafety said: “After close review of recent tweets from the @realDonaldTrump account and the context around them we have permanently suspended the account due to the risk of further incitement of violence.”
Trump tweeted on January 8, “The 75,000 great American patriots who voted for me, AMERICA FIRST and MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN, will have a GIANT VOICE long into the future. They will not be disrespected or treated unfairly in any way, shape or form!!!”
Twitter stated in its blog on the matter, “After assessing the language in these tweets against our glorification of violence policy, we have determined that these tweets are in violation of the glorification of violence policy and the user @realDonaldTrump should be immediately permanently suspended from the service.”
