The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Friday visited the spot in Poonch district, a day after five jawans of the Indian Army were killed and another injured in a deadly militant attack.
The vehicle in which the jawans were travelling in caught fire while moving from Bhimber Gali to Sangiot in District Poonch after being ambushed by militants amid inclement weather in the area. Five soldiers died on the spot while one was injured. The condition of injured jawan is reported to be critical.
The five soldiers belonged to the counter insurgency Rashtriya Rifles and were identified as Havaldar Mandeep Singh, Sepoy Harkrishan Singh, Lance Naik Kulwant Singh, Sepoy Sewak Singh, all from Punjab and Lance Naik Debashish of Orissa. Soon after the incident, army and police personnel rushed to the spot.
Visuals showed semi-burnt bodies of the soldiers lying on the road beside the burning truck.
According to reports, a team of NIA investigated the spot even as a massive cordon-and-search operation continues in the area to track down the “attackers”. The Indian Army has pressed drones and sniffer dogs to trace the attackers.
Speaking to reporters in Moga district, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced an ex-gratia of Rs 1 crore each to the kin of the four soldiers.
