Nitin Nabin was on Tuesday formally declared the new national president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Succeeding J P Nadda, he will be the youngest-ever national president of the BJP. The 12th Chief of world’s largest political party is just 45. The development marks the beginning of a new chapter for the ruling party as it looks to further consolidate its political dominance across the country.
The results of the BJP’s organisational elections were announced by K Laxman, the party’s Returning Officer. He handed over the certificate of election to Nabin at a function held at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi Tuesday. Laxman said the outcome reflected the BJP’s internal culture. “This election shows that in the BJP, leadership rises from hard work and dedication, not from dynastic privilege,” he said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, outgoing president J P Nadda, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari were present on the dais to witness the leadership transition. Besides and senior BJP leaders, Union Minister, Chief Ministers of BJP-ruled states were also present on the occasion.
Nitin Nabin is the 12th national president of the BJP since its founding in 1980, a year that coincides his birth. Known as a low-profile and unassuming leader, Nabin was born on May 23, 1980 at Ranchi in Jharkhand that was then part of Bihar.
Following his appointment as the BJP’s working president on December 14, he resigned from his ministerial positions in the Bihar government, where he held portfolios, including law and justice, urban development, and housing.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi called newly elected BJP President Nitin Nabin as his boss. “You will think Modi is a third term PM, became CM at 50 years, has been head of government for 25 years but all these things are secondary. My greatest pride is — I am a BJP worker and Nitin Nabin ji is my boss,” Modi said as he welcomed the new chief on stage.
Modi said Nabin is a millennial who can best articulate and represent the aspirations of the youth. “Nitin ji in one way is a millennial. He is from a generation, which has seen technological changes. He has seen the era of radio and is also an AI user. He has youthful energy and fine organisational skills which will be of great value to us,” Modi said referring to 2026 being the 75 year of the establishment of Jana Sangh, the precursor of BJP.
In an important message, Modi said Nabin’s twin responsibilities would include managing the world’s largest political party and ensuring coordination between the ruling NDA-alliance partners.
