New Delhi, September 28
NLC India Limited (NLCIL), a Navratna Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Coal, proudly marks its 10th anniversary in renewable energy generation today.
This significant milestone was first achieved on September 28, 2015, when the company commissioned its inaugural 10 MW solar photovoltaic power plant in Neyveli.
Guided by the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, NLCIL has played a pivotal role in transforming India’s energy landscape. Following the Prime Minister’s call for transitioning from “Megawatts to Gigawatts” in 2015, NLCIL became the first Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE) to generate 1 GW of renewable energy. This achievement underscores the company’s strong commitment to sustainable power generation and India’s clean energy goals.
While traditionally a lignite-based power generator, NLCIL has successfully ventured into renewable energy, boasting 1,380 MW of solar power plants and 51 MW of wind power projects. To date, the company has generated an impressive 1,234 crore units of green energy, effectively preventing the emission of 1 crore tonnes of carbon dioxide. This contribution is not only reducing India’s carbon footprint but also providing affordable and sustainable power to millions across the country.
Looking ahead, NLCIL’s corporate strategy aims for a 10,000 MW renewable energy capacity by 2030. To achieve this ambitious target, the company has formed two subsidiaries: NLC India Renewables Ltd (NIRL), focusing on asset monetization, and NLC India Green Energy Ltd (NIGEL), which leads clean energy initiatives. NLCIL’s active participation in the International Solar Alliance (ISA) further reinforces its dedication to environmental sustainability within the coal sector.
Under the leadership of Union Minister of Coal and Mines, Shri G. Kishan Reddy, NLCIL is at the forefront of renewable energy innovation. The company is pursuing a wide range of projects, including solar and wind power, energy storage systems (ESS), green hydrogen, pumped storage hydro projects, lignite-to-methanol conversion, and critical mineral exploration.
With a current renewable energy capacity of 1.4 GW, NLCIL is on track to quadruple this figure, aiming to reach 10 GW by 2030. The company’s ongoing projects in Neyveli, Barsingsar (Rajasthan), Gujarat, and Assam are critical to achieving this goal. In a noteworthy development, NLCIL recently signed a 25-year power purchase agreement with Telangana state DISCOMs for 200 MW of solar energy, secured under the Central Public Sector Undertaking (CPSU) scheme.
As NLCIL celebrates this 10-year milestone, the company remains committed to contributing toward India’s net zero emissions target by 2070, playing a vital role in building a sustainable and aspirational future for the nation.
