NMDC Limited, India’s largest iron ore producer, is celebrating one year of its Transformation & Innovation Department, a dedicated department formed on November 4, 2024, aimed at expediting strategic projects, fostering a culture of innovation, and ensuring adaptability in a rapidly evolving industrial landscape.

In just twelve months, this department has become a driving force, bringing first-of-its-kind mining technologies to India. Created with a purpose to expedite strategic initiatives and strengthen NMDC’s competitive edge, the Transformation & Innovation Department has successfully bridged the gap between ambition and execution, ensuring that the organization remains responsive to the changing dynamics of the global mining industry.

“Our first year has been a journey of learning, innovation, and transformation,” said Shri Amitava Mukherjee, CMD, NMDC. “In establishing the T&I Department, we set out to build the future of NMDC, one that changes the way mining is done: agile, technology-led, and purpose-driven. Over the past year, we have not only implemented change but also inspired it. As we look ahead, our focus remains clear to accelerate NMDC’s growth through innovation, strengthen our role in India’s industrial progress, and redefine what responsible mining can achieve.”

The department’s first year has been marked by tangible progress. It has completed major assignments such as the Operationalization of the Pellet Plant at Donimalai on revenue sharing basis under NMDC Partnership Policy (NPP), implementation of a Digital Project Management Unit, dust fencing at Donimalai, and detailed project reports for the In-Pit Crushing and Conveying (IPCC) system at Bacheli and for 190T Dumpers. Implementation of Automatic Sampling System at all production units is also under progress. These initiatives showcase NMDC’s focus on improving operational efficiency, sustainability, and technological excellence.

Several other projects are now on the horizon. The Stockpile Management and Remote Operation of Stacker & Reclaimer at SP-III, Kirandul, and the In-Pit Modular Crushing and Conveying at Donimalai are set to be awarded soon, while projects such as the 20 MTPA Buffer Stockpile & Blending Yard at Vizag, the Automatic Sample Transportation System to a Centralised Laboratory, and Operationalization of the Sponge Iron Unit at Paloncha on revenue sharing basis, the Corporate Office and Residential Complex at Patancheru, and the 2 MTPA Beneficiation Plant at Kirandul are in advanced stages under NPP.

Looking forward, the department aims to build on this momentum by operationalizing under-utilized assets and integrating next-generation technologies to enhance capacity and efficiency. Its focus for the coming years will be to ensure that every strategic move contributes to a stronger, smarter, and more sustainable NMDC.

As the department enters its second year, the company marks the beginning of the NMDC 2.0 era; re-imagining mining through technology, people, and purpose, and setting new benchmarks for responsible and innovative mining in India.
