National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) is fast spreading its footprint nationally and has accelerated its Jharkhand plan where the iron-ore miner will be venturing into coal mining.
Chairman-cum-Managing Director of NMDC Sumit Deb today met Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren and discussed the projects located in the state. The senior officials of the NMDC were also present on the occasion.
“It was an honour to meet the Hon’ble CM of Jharkhand, Shri @HemantSorenJMM to discuss NMDC’s opportunities in the State. Grateful to the Govt of Jharkhand for allotment of two coal blocks and looking forward to new ventures,” Deb said in a tweet. The company said it looked for a promising future in Jharkhand.
In 2019, the Union Ministry of Coal had allocated two coal blocks to iron ore mining company NMDC under Section 5(1) of Coal Mines (Special Provisions) Act 2015. The two blocks Rohne and Tokisud North— situated at an aerial distance of 10-15 km apart — are located at Hazaribagh district of Jharkhand.
The development and commission of coal mines would be a new venture for the iron ore miner. The NMDC had prioritised commissioning both the coal blocks in the annual plan for the financial year 2021-22.
Rohne coal block has extractable reserves of 191 million tonnes (MT) and planned production capacity of 8 million tonnes per annum, and the Tokisud North coal block has extractable reserves of about 52 MT of thermal coal and planned production capacity of 2.32 million tonnes per annum.
