Raipur, June 14
Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) has a distinct identity among other arms of the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL). And the Chairman, Soma Mondal could realise it, literally.
The dignitaries normally plant a sapling as a token. But for the SAIL Chairman, Soma Mondal it was a full-grown tree that would mark her maiden visit to the plant.
In a unique environmental initiative, a 20-year-old banyan tree relocated by Sinter Plant 3 collective was re-planted on Saturday by Soma Mondal. The Chairman was on a two-day visit to the BSP that concluded on Saturday.
The tree was originally located behind RMP Arising Building in the Raw Material Area of SP-3. It was planned to cover the open area behind RMP Arising Building by a roof shade so as to prevent RMP arisings getting wet during the rainy season. The main constraint in making the shade was the banyan tree that was located at the place where one of the columns of the shade had to be erected.
The only options available was to either cut the tree or relocate it to a new location.
SP-3 collective under the guidance of S V Nandanwar, CGM(SP-3) took up the challenge to shift the 20-year-old tree. The pit was dug and soil was made moist around the tree for 3 days. Omega Crane was used in supporting and lifting the tree. Special care was taken for keeping the roots and surrounding clumps of soil intact during uprooting of the tree.
The tree was shifted with the help of a trailer and fixed in a freshly dug new pit in front of Sinter Bhavan at SP-3. The SAIL Chairman formally planted it.
Soma Mondal and Harinand Rai, Director (Technical, Projects and Raw Material) complimented the team of SP-III for this initiative.
