THDC India Limited (formerly Tehri Hydro Development Corporation Limited), a subsidiary of power major NTPC Limited, has declared commercial operation date (COD) of unit II (250 MW) of Tehri Pumped Storage Plant (PSP).

“In terms of Regulation 51(1) read with Part B of Schedule III of the SEBI (Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements) Regulations, 2015, we hereby inform that consequent upon successful commissioning and due approvals, Unit II (250 MW) of Tehri PSP (4X250 MW) of THDC India Limited is declared on Commercial Operation w.e.f. 00:00 Hrs of 10.07.2025,” the company said. With this, total installed and commercial capacity of THDC India Limited has now become 2,747 MW while that of NTPC rose to 82836 MW.

THDC India Limited, which is under the ownership of NTPC Limited, was incorporated in July 1988 to develop, operate and maintain the Tehri Hydro Power Complex and other Hydro Projects Tehri PSP is envisaged to generate 1000 MW peaking power to enhance system reliability and to provide balanced power to thermal and renewable generation during off peak hours. The reservoirs created by Tehri Dam and Koteshwar Dam will act as upstream and downstream reservoirs for the pumped storage plant.

The plant will contribute to stabilization by meeting peak load and balancing requirements. Tehri PSP consists of four reversible units of 250 MW each, involving construction of an underground machine hall on the left bank of river Bhagirathi. The main feature of the project is that it has a large head deviation of about 90 m between the maximum and minimum head from which the reversible units will operate. The operation of Tehri PSP is based on the concept of recycling of water between the upper reservoir and the lower reservoir.

On completion of the project, there will be an additional generation capacity of 1000 MW (annual generation 2442 million units) of peaking power in the northern region. The pumping operation of the reversible units will require 3075 MU of peak power. With the construction of Tehri PSP, the Tehri Hydro Power Complex will have a capacity of 2400 MW. It will serve as the major peaking power station with an installed capacity of 2400 MW.

The expected commissioning of project third and fourth units is September 2025.
