National Thermal Power Corporation’s (NTPC) Simhadri Super Thermal Power Plant, Visakhapatnam has commissioned 15 MW floating solar plant.
“In line with the Corporate Disclosure requirements, we wish to inform that consequent upon successful commissioning of 15 MW capacity, Simhadri Floating Solar PV Project at Simhadri, Andhra Pradesh is
hereby declared on commercial operation w.e.f. 10:00 Hrs. of 21.08.2021,” NTPC said in a regulatory filing today.
Last month, country’s largest power producer had commissioned the 10 MW unit. With the commission of 15 MW, the NTPC has fully commissioned the plant that has an installed capacity of 25 MW plant.
The project is India’s largest floating installation to date, and it is also regarded as an engineering marvel because of its unique anchoring and mooring techniques. Floating solar is also known as floating photovoltaics (FPV) or floatovoltaics. A new alternative has been used quite frequently in the solar industry, which is floating solar. The solar array floats above a waterbody or a reservoir in which solar panels must be attached to a buoyant structure. Usually, the floating solar installations are most likely to be located in a lake, basin or man-made water bodies, such as reservoirs.
The contract for the Rs 110-crore project was awarded to BHEL and with a completion period of 15 months. Another 100 MW floating solar project till date is being developed in Telangana’s Ramagundam and is likely to be commissioned this year. NTPC also plans a 92 MW floating unit at the Kayamkulam plant in Kerala.
With the commissioning of Simhadri Floating Solar PV Project this, the installed and commercial capacity of NTPC has went up to 53,475 MW and 52,425 MW respectively while for the NTPC group, it has surged to 66,900 MW and 65,850 MW respectively.
