The country’s largest integrated power company and a PSU under Ministry of Power, National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) would assist in redevelopment of civic amenities in Kedarnath.
The temple town was devastated in a furious flood some seven years ago. The Kedarnath valley, along with other parts of the state of Uttarakhand, was hit with unprecedented flash floods on 16 and 17 June 2013. On 16 June, at about 7:30 p.m. a landslide and mudslides occurred near Kedarnath Temple with loud peals of thunder. An enormously loud peal was heard and huge amounts of water started gushing from Chorabari Tal or Gandhi Tal down Mandakini river at about 8:30 p.m. washing everything away in its path.
NTPC today inked an agreement with Shri Kedarnath Utthan Charitable Trust for the redevelopment of civic amenities Kedarnath town. The initiative, as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) drive, would cost Rs 25 crore to the company.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Dilip Jawalkar, IAS, Secretary Tourism, Government of Uttarakhand and MSD Bhattamishra, ED (CSR/R&R/LA), NTPC in the presence of D K Patel, Director (HR), NTPC Ltd.
CSR has been an integral part of NTPC’s business of power generation and the power major aims to light up the lives of millions of Indians through its CSR efforts. NTPC has been supporting varied initiatives such as basic infrastructure development, education, community health & sanitation, capacity building and gender empowerment.
NTPC Group has 71 Power stations including 29 Renewable projects. The Group has over 20 GW of capacity under construction which includes 5 GW of renewable projects. Uninterrupted supply of electricity through environment-friendly energy projects at affordable prices has been the hallmark of NTPC.
