The Odisha government had made heavy bandobast to battle the approaching Cyclone Yaas that would be hitting the state’s coastline in a few hours from now.
The entire state machinery swung into action to evacuate people, right from infant to critical elderly, to a safer place. So far, over 2 lakh people have been shifted from vulnerable locations to safer places in 10 districts that were likely to be affected by nature’s fury.
Cyclone Yaas is likely to hit Odisha’s coast line between Balasore and Bhadrak district somewhere near Dhamra in the morning of May 26, the Meteorological Department said. The impact of the storm would be a very severe Cyclone category before making landfall.
As per the data released by the State Special Relief Commissioner (SRC), 2,10,621 people have been shifted to cyclone shelters in Balasore, Bhadrak, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur Jajpur, Kendrapara, Keonjhar, Khordha, Dhenkanal, Gajapati, Ganjam, Mayurbhanj, Nayagarh, Puri and Angul so far.
The maximum number of 74,132 people had been shifted in Balasore district followed by 73,103 from Bhadrak and 41.685 from Kendrapara, the SRC data said.
The Odisha police personnel did an exemplary job by reaching out to the people in need and taking quick action in evacuating them to safe places. With high-end equipment, the police are geared up to handle the situation though Army, NDRF and other agencies would be assisting the local administration.
In Bhadrak, the women cops were seen carrying infants and guiding children, women, and other locals to safety in remote Chandabali and Naikanadihi villages.
The state government has identified pregnant and expecting mothers in districts that are going to be affected by Cyclone Yaas. Pregnant women are being shifted to Maa Gruha or Community Health Centres while high-risk pregnant women are being shifted to nearest hospitals.
In Mayurbhanj, 71 construction workers under Jashipur police station were evacuated from non-concrete roof construction site to School at Katha under Karanjia police station. Similarly, Puri police timely evacuated people from the coastal villages.
