Four more cases of the new COVID-19 variant Omicron were reported in India on Sunday, taking the tally to 37.
One case each was reported from Nagpur, Chandigarh, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. This is the first case of Omicron detected in Nagpur, Chandigarh and Andhra Pradesh.
A 40-year-old person was tested positive for the new variant of COVID-19 in Nagpur that is well connected with Chhattisgarh by road and rail.
Andhra Pradesh also reported its first case of Omicron when a 34-year-old man, who returned from Ireland late last month, tested positive for the new variant. The man from Vijayanagaram district had come to Visakhapatnam via Mumbai on November 27. He had tested negative for the coronavirus in an RT-PCR test conducted at the Mumbai airport.
After the mandatory 14-day home quarantine in Vijayanagaram, he had undergone another RT-PCR test that turned out to be positive.
In Chandigarh also, the first case of COVID-19’s first variant was reported when a 20-year-old man living in Italy came to meet his relatives and was has tested positive for Omicron. The youth, who is fully vaccinated, is currently in institutional quarantine.
Third case of Omicron was detected in Karnataka after a 34-year-old returned from South Africa tested positive for the new variant on Sunday.
Maharashtra has reported the highest number of cases at 17. Despite the rise in new cases of the Omicron coronavirus variant, the Uddhav Thackeray government in Maharashtra has ruled out any kind of restrictions or lockdown in the state.
