Chandigarh, December 24

Over two dozen farmer unions that were part of Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), which spearheaded the agitation against the three fam laws, have decided to contest the ensuing assembly elections in Punjab.

As many as 25 farmer unions have decided to jump into the poll fray. Sources said 7 of the 32 unions – which formed the SKM – have decided to stay away from the polls, but the remaining 25 decided to take a plunge into politics.

The decision was taken at a meeting held near Ludhiana late Friday evening. The unions are likely to forge an alliance with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

Last week, Gurnam Singh Chaduni, who led the farmers’ agitation, has announced to float Sanyukt Sangharsh Party (SSP) and contest all the seats in the ensuing assembly elections in Punjab. The decision of farmer bodies entering into electoral battle will change many equations in Punjab politics.

In the fast-changing scenario, the ruling Congress party in Punjab will be the biggest suffer. Given the alliance with the AAP or contesting independently, the farmer unions in the fray will divide the anti-BJP votes.
