Want to adopt an elephant or a tiger? The Jharkhand government is making it possible in its Zoo!
The state government has come out with a proposal to facilitate people to adopt an animal in Bhagwan Birsa Munda Biological Park, located in Ormanjhi village near Ranchi in Jharkhand. Also known as Ranchi Zoo, it was established in 1994 at the bank of Getalsud Dam on the Patna-Ranchi highway. The park has two divisions the zoological section is dedicated in 83 hectare and botanical section is spread over 21 hectare.
The zoo has been promoting a program for adoption of animals to give them better facilities. Various organisations and celebrities also adopted animals in Ranchi Zoo. Bollywood star Priyanka Chopra had earlier adopted tigress Durga and lioness Sundari.
The public sector enterprises that include Central Coalfields Limited (CCL), MECON, State Bank of India (SBI), Punjab National Bank (PNB) have also adopted few animals.
In a fresh proposal floated, the zoo authorities have offered to adopt an elephant for Rs 5 lakh, tiger for Rs 3 lakh, tiger cub Rs 1 lakh and entire snake house for Rs 3 lakh. People can also adopt other animals in the zoo. It will be valid for a year.
The move is aimed to generate revenue for the maintenance. Since the COVID-19 outbreak, many public spaces have been closed, including zoos. It is hard for the zoo authorities to take care of the animals and make ends meet without the main source of income – the entry tickets.
To collect the funds necessary for animal care, a few other prominent zoos across the country have introduced online animal adoption. People can virtually ‘adopt’ any animal of their choice for a specified period, and the money they pay will go towards the food, grooming, and medical expenses of that animal.
