The shortage of semiconductors in the Suzuki Motor Gujarat Private Limited (SMG) is likely to impact the production in the month of August.
“This is to inform you that owing to the semiconductor shortage situation, the Company has been informed by its contract manufacturing company, Suzuki Motor Gujarat Private Limited (SMG), that production will be partially impacted in this month,” Maruti Suzuki India Limited said in a regulatory filing today. SMG will tentatively not carry out production on the three Saturdays (7th, 14th and 21st August).
In addition, some of the production lines may see temporary reduction from 2-shift to 1-shift working. As the situation is dynamic and uncertain, the company will monitor and take a day-to-day decision on models, lines or shifts to optimize resources for maximum efficiency.
SMG is owned by Suzuki Motor Corporation. Located in Hansalpur, Ahmedabad in Gujarat, it is the first and the only Suzuki automobile manufacturing plant wholly owned directly by Suzuki as a foreign company while other plants are owned by Maruti Suzuki. The plant supplies vehicles to Maruti Suzuki in the domestic market and to overseas markets.
The plant was opened on February 1, 2017 and has a total annual capacity of 750,000 units. It helped Suzuki achieve exports of 2 million units from India.
