Patna metro disaster: Two killed, six injured in tunnel

Patna district administration and DMRC today started separate investigations into the Patna metro tunnel disaster in which two workers were killed and six injured at the underground  tunnel construction site on Ashok Rajpath last night.

Two workers, identified as tunnel helper Manoj Behra (27) and Vijay Kumar Behra (36), were killed in the 60 feet deep tunnel near Patna University. Third labourer is admitted in a private hospital where doctors described his condition as critical.

According to district magistrate, Chandrashekhar Singh, ADM ( law and order) has been directed to investigate the tunnel mishap. A press release issued by DMRC said “DMRC which is a consultant for Patna metro project is conducting an independent investigation in to the causes and find out  necessary remedial measures.”

DMRC admitted a mechanical failure into the locomotive leading to the death of two workers. The Patna metro project covering 39 kms in two phases is being constructed by Larsen and Turbo company, DMRC said construction company has assured compensation to the victims which would be in addition to the statutory ex gratia sanctioned by the labour department.

This was the second incident in metro project in last one week. At RPS More on Bailey road, one labourer was killed when a crane crashed down. Last year, four passengers on an auto were crushed to death on Mithapur site as the heavy machine of metro project fell on the vehicle.
