Elected leaders’ reluctance to fulfill the promises made to lure the voters before the elections is not infrequent. But a loser coming forward to implement the vows is an exception.
Two politicians in Kerala, Sajida Hyder and Nidheesh, are going to make the difference. Having lost the recently concluded local elections, both had decided to keep up to their promises even though they lost the polls.
Sajida Hyder, a housewife, contested Kerala local polls 2020. She was an independent candidate. During the campaign, she came across four families living in misery without a roof. Sajida promised to address their problem once she was elected.
Unfortunately, she lost the election, but not the determination. A friend of my husband and a few other like-minded people offered a piece of land measuring about 5200 square feet. The land was gifted to four families who were living in rented places for the last many years.
“Our next aim is to get some help for them to build houses,” Sajida said. The dreams of four families envisaging a roof are coming true, literally, by a lost candidate. She and her supporters are also making arrangements for portable water in a few villages.
Besides Sajida, Nidheesh is trying to fulfill the poll promises he has made despite failing in the election. He contested from Ulliyeri of Kozhikode as Congress candidate.
During the campaign when he reached the house of 88-year-old Theyyathira to seek her vote, she showed Nidheesh her partially destroyed house with leaking roof. She sought Nidheesh’s help to renovate it.
Half of the roof of her house was covered with tarpaulin sheets and also had no proper doors. Nidheesh promised to get her house renovated. Despite losing the election, he kept his word.
“I had promised her that I would renovate it whether I win or lose. After I lost I shared this with my friends and they all offered to help. Now we all have started to renovate the house. First we would start from the roofing that we have replaced the broken tiles,” Nidheesh said.
