Ahmedabad, June 12

An Air India flight crashed minutes after taking off from Gujarat’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad on Thursday.

The flight that was travelling to London with 242 passengers on board, sources said. Visuals from the crash showed thick plumes of smoke at the airport.

The plane caught fire after crashing and fire tenders were rushed to the spot, officials said. “A plane crashed in the Meghaninagar area near the airport. It is not yet clear what type of plane it was,” said Ahmedabad police commissioner GS Malik.

The crash occurred when the aircraft was taking off, the TV channels reported. Visuals showed debris on fire, with thick black smoke rising up into the sky near the airport.
