Kanpur, June 4
The Uttar Pradesh police had arrested at least 36 people in connection with the violence that broke out in Kanpur on Friday.
According to police, the disturbance started when one group tried to oppose forced closure of markets by a minority group after Friday prayers. Thirty people and 13 police personnel were reportedly injured in the violence that broke out in the Beconganj area of Kanpur city. A number of vehicles were damaged and shops have been looted in the violence.
Kanpur police commissioner Vijay Meena said that the situation was under control and additional police personnel had been deployed at sensitive locations. Based on the close-circuit cameras, police have identified 36 miscreants who led the mob to commit crime, the police said, adding that three FIRs have been registered in connection with the incident.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed the directory general of police (DGP) and state chief secretary along with additional chief secretary (Home) to invoke Gangster Act and National Security Act (NSA) against the trouble makers. He had also asked the authorities to identify the religious places built on road.
