Kathmandu, December 25
Chairperson of CPN -Maoist Center Pushpa Kamal Dahal has been appointed the Prime Minister of Nepal.
This is Dahal’s third term as the country’s Prime Minister. President Bhandari will administer oath of office and secrecy to Dahal at an official ceremony to be held at Shital Niwas at 4 pm on Monday.
President Bidya Devi Bhandari today appointed him as the PM as per Article 76 (2) of the constitution of Nepal, after receiving Dahal’s claim that was backed by as many as 169 Members of the House of Representatives.
As many as seven old and new parties – CPN-UML, CPN (Maoist Center), Rastriya Swatantra Party, Rastriya Prajatantra Party, Janata Samajwadi Party, Janamat Party and Nagarik Unmukti Party – along with 166 lawmakers have extended their support to Dahal. Besides, three independent Members of Parliament also backed Dahal.
Earlier, Dahal staked claim for the new government with the support of newly formed Balkot Alliance. UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli agreed to make Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Chairman of CPN Maoist Center, as the new prime minister after a meeting of six parties held at Oli’s residence at Balkot.
As none of the political parties in the November 20 general elections secured requisite majority seats in parliament, President Bhandari had earlier served a week-long deadline for parties to stake claim for the new government leadership with the support of two or more than two parties. The deadline expired at 5pm today.
