Raipur, November 4
Prime Minister Narendra Modi Saturday announced that the free foodgrains to poor people under the National Food Security Act (NFSA) would be extended for another five years.
Addressing a mammoth election meeting in Chhattisgarh’s Durg district, the Prime Minister said it was not an election promise but Modi guarantee. “From Chhattisgarh’s Durg district, I am elated to announce that the free ration scheme benefiting over 80 crore people will be extended for another five years in the country,” Modi said.
The Central government had launched the scheme to provide free foodgrains to about 81.35 crore beneficiaries under the National Food Security Act (NFSA) for one year from January 1, 2023. It was a historic decision that reflects the sensitivity of the prime minister towards the beneficiaries of welfare schemes.
Lashing out at the grand-old party, Modi said for Congress, poor people had been only a vote bank. “Mera Jeevan dharma hai garibo ki sewa (my religion of life is to serve the poor),” Modi said, adding that during COVID-induced pandemic, he ensured no poor family battled for a time meal.
The Prime Minister levelled a serious charge and said the Congress government had created hurdles in implementing the schemes floated by the BJP-led Central government for the poor people. The housing scheme launched for the poor people stands as an example in Chhattisgarh. “After coming to power, the BJP will accelerate the distribution of houses to the poor people under the Atal Awaas Yojana,” Modi said.
