Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Monday said after coming to power in Uttar Pradesh, skill development schools would be opened in every district in the name of ‘veeranganas’ like freedom fighter Jhalkari Bai.

Jhalkaribai (22 November 1830 – 4 April 1858) was a woman soldier who played an important role in the 1857 revolt against Britishers. She served in the women’s army of Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi. She eventually rose to a position of a prominent advisor to the queen, Rani of Jhansi. At the height of the siege of Jhansi, she disguised herself as the queen and fought on her behalf, on the front, allowing the queen to escape safely out of the fort.

She died at an age of just 27 though there is no clear account of cause. While some said she was caught and hanged, others said she died in the battlefield.

“Salute to ‘veerangana’ Jhalkari Bai. The Congress has decided that if it forms the government in the state, skill schools will be opened in every district for girls in the name of ‘veeranganas’ like Jhalkari Bai,” Priyanka said in a tweet in Hindi on the birth anniversary of the freedom fighter.

The Congress leader has already made a number of women-centric promises, including 40 per cent tickets to females in the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections next year, smartphones to all Class 12 pass girls and electric scooters to graduate women, if her party forms a government in the state.
