Raj Kumar Singh assumed charge as Cabinet Minister in the Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy.
Expressing gratitude to the Prime Minister for giving the responsibility, Singh said that the Prime Minister had shown great confidence and they would live up to that.
In his brief interaction with the media after assuming charge, the union minister said they had achieved targets of electrification set by the Prime Minister well before the schedule and would now move forward to ensure that the benefits of the power and energy sector reach the common man.
Singh said the country’s power sector was in deficit and they had reeled under crises like load shedding. “But those days are gone as we have now transformed India from a power deficit country to a power surplus country,” the union minister said.
“We have added 1,82000 megawatts to make it a power surplus country. We are adding more capacity,” he added
The bulk of the new capacity addition is renewable as it has no carbon load, the minister said, adding that in addition, the entire country had been connected to one grid so that power could be transferred from one corner of the country to another corner.
Singh said the government had built a capacity that can facilitate transfer of 1 lakh megawatt.
