Ahmedabad, April 2
After raising the issue in the political platform, Congress leader and former Member of Parliament Rahul Gandhi is likely to move to the court of law to challenge the decision of Surat court.
The former Congress President was sentenced to two years imprisonment in connection with a criminal defamation case by a Surat court on March 23, 2023. The case was related to Congress leader’s comment on Modi surname during an election rally. The defamation complaint was filed by Purnesh Modi who raised strong exceptions over Rahul Gandhi’s comment: “How come all thieves have Modi as the common surname?”
Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi was disqualified from Lok Sabha, a day after he was convicted by a Surat court in a 2019 criminal defamation case. He represented Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency in Kerala. The action came as per the established parliamentary rules and regulations.
Following his disqualification, Rahul Gandhi would not be able to contest elections for eight years unless a higher court upholds his conviction and sentence.
According to Congress sources, Gandhi is likely to visit Gujarat on Monday and file an appeal in the sessions court against his conviction and two-year sentence. The legal team of the party has prepared the plea that will be filed in Surat’s sessions court, sources said, adding that Rahul Gandhi is expected to demand a stay on the conviction in the defamation case.
The Congress party lodged vehement protest against the development and staged a day-long Satyagrah in the Rajghat terming the disqualification as politically motivated.
